Randy Coleman of Horton, Michigan, has been involved with Special Olympics for 13 years, serving as a certified coach in Alpine skiing, athletics, basketball, bocce, bowling, cycling, kayaking, snowboarding, softball, swimming and volleyball. He will represent Special Olympics as head coach in kayaking. In working with Special Olympics, Randy has acquired additional leadership skills, improving his patience and his coaching techniques. Working to bring the sport of kayaking to Special Olympics Michigan, Randy looks forward to now coaching on an international stage, watching his athletes do their best.
Now retired from Consumers Energy, where he managed multiple information technology departments, Randy is an active volunteer with Special Olympics Michigan. Throughout his life, he has always looked up to his mother, who was diagnosed as legally blind in her childhood. Overcoming many obstacles, she was able to get a driver’s license, acquire meaningful work and have a family. In preparation for the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023, Randy is regularly communicating with Special Olympics USA kayaking athletes, learning some of the German language and focusing on his own health goals. He is honored to assume a head coach role and anticipates great success for Special Olympics USA athletes.
