Joseph Wigand has been part of Special Olympics since he was born. He has been a coach, Special Olympics Unified Sports partner, volunteer and has served on several county teams. In middle school, Joseph was part of one of the very first Unified Sports teams in Broward County. He continued to volunteer throughout high school. When he went off to college, Joseph continued to volunteer for Special Olympics through events and Special Olympics Florida's state Games at ESPN's Wide World of Sports. Upon graduating, he moved to Boston and became involved in Special Olympics Massachusetts, where he was a Unified Sports partner for flag football, basketball, volleyball, and softball. When he moved back to Florida, he started teaching at Ridge Community High School and started a Special Olympics program there. In a short time, the program at Ridge Community High School has grown from a volleyball team with 8 athletes to a program that does 4 sports, and has 20 athletes. Outside of Special Olympics, Joseph enjoy playing ultimate frisbee and playing board games.
