Aspen DeField, from Arvada, Colorado, is set to attend Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 as a coach for Special Olympics USA athletes competing in bowling. She has been involved with Special Olympics for 15 years after first volunteering as an undergrad while studying sport psychology. Through her current job as a recreation therapist for City of Denver’s adaptive recreation program and as a Special Olympics volunteer, she says she has “seen the positive ways in which athletes, coaches and volunteers have been affected by Special Olympics and am proud and motivated to be involved in a small part of that.” This will be Aspen's second World Games. She’s most looking forward to watching the athletes grow from this experience. “I love sharing the moment with athletes as they see parts of the world for the first time and are taken completely out of their comfort zones.” In her free time Aspen enjoys playing recreation league soccer, riding her bike, taking road trips and cheering on her college and professional sports teams. “Everybody needs a place to succeed, feel supported, be pushed to become the best version of themselves and be accepted as full, complete and worthwhile individuals regardless of limitations or disabling factors," she said. “Special Olympics not only provides that place, it also shares it with the world so that the world itself is becoming safer and more supportive.”
