John Lair of Shawnee, Kansas, began coaching Special Olympics athletes 32 years ago. For the past seven years, he has served as Special Olympics Kansas president and CEO. John has supported athletes in three Special Olympics World Games. In his fourth, John will represent Special Olympics USA as a coach in snowshoeing. John’s dedication has earned him the title of Special Olympics North America Outstanding Coach and National Hero of the Year by the American Health Care Association.

In 2018, Lair was diagnosed with cancer and was unable to coach for Special Olympics USA during his recovery. He plans to retire from coaching following the Special Olympics World Winter Games Turin 2025. He feels lucky to have worked with such great people and is ready to watch the celebration of their hard work in Italy.
