Rachel Mulligan

Rachel was connected to the Special Olympics through a family friend five years ago and now at 24 she has been competing ever since. Special Olympics helped her find her place. “High school was hard for me. High school sports had tryouts,” Rachel said. Rachel resides in Papillion, Nebraska and graduated from the Athletic Leadership Program (ALPS) in Nebraska, which transitioned her to the success she has achieved. Rachel participates in various sports throughout the seasons. She competes in basketball, bowling, swimming, soccer, track, softball, and snowshoeing and her favorite being soccer. Outside the Olympics she enjoys nature walks, and drawing. She is also employed at a chain breakfast/lunch restaurant as a hostess, cashier, and trainer. The Special Olympics has a valuable meaning to Rachel. To her the Olympics help her “stand up for herself” and help her “be her own advocate.” The Special Olympics has “changed her life” and she’s excited to “represent her country” at the World Games and meet new people around the country. Rachel’s father Mike is one of her biggest supporters and is proud of her achievements. “It’s inspirational to see the way she competes,” Mike said. “Because they’re professional athletes they represent the best of competition.
